A dental crown is a cap designed to fit over the visible section of a tooth, and it is used to restore a tooth after injury or decay, to anchor a dental bridge into place, or to address cosmetic issues like misshapen teeth or discoloration. Modern dental crowns are incredibly lifelike, allowing them to restore a tooth’s beauty as well as its function. If you’ve never gotten one before, you may be wondering if the process will hurt. Here’s what you can expect when receiving a dental crown.

Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are typically placed over two appointments, and the entire process is rendered painless thanks to local anesthetic treatments. You may also receive sedation treatments if you need a little more help sitting comfortably in the dentist’s chair. While you should feel no pain during the process, you may feel some soreness for a few days afterward, but this can be managed by avoiding chewing with the treated tooth until it feels better and treating the discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.

The First Appointment

When you sit in the dentist’s chair for your first appointment, your dentist will begin by numbing the tooth being treated. They will then remove any damaged or decayed structure from your tooth, and they may rebuild some parts of it with cosmetic resin. Once your tooth has been appropriately reshaped, they will scan it with a special device to ascertain its measurements. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth, you will be sent on your way, and the data from the scan will be sent to a laboratory where a skilled technician will construct your crown.

The Second Appointment

You’ll come back to the office about two weeks later when your dentist receives your permanent crown. During this appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and your dentist will check to make sure the permanent one fits properly. The crown will be cemented in place, and your dentist will make any final adjustments. You will then be free to show your beautifully restored smile to the world.

There’s nothing to worry about if you need a dental crown. These caps can restore a tooth to its original appearance and function, and the procedure that places them is completely painless.
